Anthroposophy at Work in the World

The Arts:

Color, Form and Movement

"In olden days speech was felt and experienced as an art. ... Thought and feeling lived within it as a unity. Now thought has become abstract, feeling has drawn inwards and between them lies speech which has become prosaic. The paths must be found again which lead to this artistic unity of primal poetry."

Marie Steiner

Speech and Drama

The art of speech formation draws on the creative and curative forces inherent in language. The rhythms, sounds and gestures of speech become tools of expression for the poetic imagination. The actor who delves into this realm of language and gesture can bring an inner world of soul and spirit to the stage. There are several speech and intern programs in the English-speaking world.

Ruth Karnes

Painting

The laws of color and form are not bound by matter. As laws of the spirit they play no less a role in the creative process than the the brush, the canvas, or the painter's conscious intent. The painter who allows these laws to work, who lets the colors themselves "speak," opens the doors to art that can do more than reproduce the visible world: It can embody something of the world of spirit. There are many artists and programs, here and abroad, working out of this understanding of visual art.

Eurythmy

Eurythmy translates the sounds, phrases, and rhythms of speech, or the dynamic elements of music into movement and gesture. The result has been described as "visible speech", or "visible song". It could be called the movement language of the soul. In painting, the laws of color and form are not bound by matter. The painter who recognizes these laws, lets the colors themselves "speak", opens the doors to art that embodies the spirit. In architecture, beyond blending beauty and function, buildings should be ecologically sound and reflect the character of the region or culture. They should provide an environment enhancing the physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being of the people who live and work in them.

The Goethanum in Dornach, Switzerland.
George Barford

"Flowforms are sculpted in series to induce rhythmical movements in streaming water. The result is not only aesthetically pleasing, it also oxygenates and purifies the water."

Architecture

It is not enough that a home, office building, school or factory blend beauty and function. It should also be ecologically sound, and reflect the character of its region or culture. Rudolf Steiner's architectural vision balanced these and other parameters in search of environments that could enhance the physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of the people who live and work in them. Structures that echo the organic forms found in nature are a distinctive element in many such buildings. The Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, designed by Steiner himself, is a prominent example of this "style" of architecture.

Music

Much work is being done to revive the musicality of the human being. Sophisticated instrumentation, electronics and amplification, even as they have stretched the boundaries of sonic imagination, have also estranged us from our inner experience of tone. The popularity of concerts and recorded music reflects our enduring fascination with musical sound, but we also need to make music. Workshops and conferences emphasizing this need, and drawing on the fundamental sounds of acoustic instruments and the human voice, help people reconnect with the "harmony of the spheres."
